Ocean Rainforest, Inc. (ORI) would like to welcome a highly motivated part-time intern to join our team in Santa Barbara. ORI is particularly interested in candidates who are excited about environmental field work and seaweed cultivation. The intern will work alongside a small, passionate team here in Santa Barbara, and will be expected to work up to 20 hours per week including participation in international team meetings.

Job Description

The intern will assist with the reproduction, cultivation, and monitoring of Giant kelp. ORI’s work aims to develop the seaweed cultivation industry in southern California and as such is both research and industry related. 

Key duties will include

·       Performance of general lab and hatchery tasks
·       Collection and processing of environmental and biomass samples at offshore site
·       Data management of the resulting samples and analysis

The internship position may extend into other areas of work within our team.

Position Details

This posting is for a part-time (up to 20/hours per week) intern. The OM will report to the Director of California Operations and the Chief Research Officer (Pacific). This internship is unpaid.

Qualifications

A graduate or undergraduate student located in the Santa Barbara area. Background or interest in marine sciences particularly with respect to environmental, biological, or ecological disciplines. The candidate must be able to work well independently and with others, show initiative, and possess strong technical writing skills.

Candidates with interest or background in mariculture, aquaculture and/or seaweed cultivation will be given special consideration as well as students who are SCUBA certified.
